Thousands of residents in the Teso sub-region are set to benefit from a comprehensive free eye camp that commenced today, Friday, March 27th, 2026, at Bukedea Teaching Hospital. The humanitarian initiative, organized by the Ruparelia Family, serves as a poignant tribute to their late son, Rajiv Ruparelia, who tragically died in an accident.
The inaugural day of the camp saw a significant turnout, with the event officially hosted by Bukedea County Member of Parliament, Hon. David Beecham Okwere and Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among.
From its start today, the free eye camp is providing a range of vital services, including thorough eye check-ups, the provision of free eyeglasses, and critical eye surgical procedures for those in need. This comprehensive approach aims to address various vision impairments and preventable blindness within the community.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. David Beecham Okwere urged locals throughout Teso to turn up in overwhelming numbers and utilize the invaluable services on offer. He emphasized the importance of accessible eye care, particularly for vulnerable populations who might otherwise struggle to afford medical attention. "Good eyesight is fundamental to daily life and productivity," Okwere stated, "and we encourage everyone to seize this incredible opportunity presented by the Ruparelia Family."
Further strengthening the camp's capacity and reach, the Anita Foundation, spearheaded by Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among, made a substantial contribution of UGX 50,000,000. This generous boost will help ensure the smooth running of the camp and enable more residents to receive the necessary treatment.
The free eye camp is scheduled to run for three days, concluding on Sunday, March 29th, 2026. Organizers anticipate that by its close, hundreds, if not thousands, will have had their vision restored or improved, leaving a lasting legacy in honor of Rajiv Ruparelia. The initiative stands as a powerful example of how personal grief can be channeled into profound community service, fostering health and well-being across the region.
