SERERE – Hundreds of women from Kateta Sub-county gathered at Kateta Model Primary School this week, setting aside their daily routines to participate in a vital training session on the construction and utilization of energy-saving stoves.

The initiative, organized by the Kateta Development Forum (KADEF), is part of a broader strategy to foster environmental conservation while simultaneously uplifting household livelihoods across the district.

The training was fully facilitated by the Serere District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau. Speaking during the event, Hon. Acom reaffirmed her dedication to the socio-economic empowerment of women in her constituency, emphasizing that practical skills are the backbone of sustainable development.

"My goal is to see our women not only become more efficient in their homes but to become active guardians of our environment," Hon. Acom said. "By providing these skills, we are reducing the burden on our forests and giving our women more time and resources to focus on other developmental activities."

Festo Kisire, the Chairperson of KADEF, highlighted the urgency of the project. He noted that the region faces growing challenges related to deforestation and the rising cost of cooking fuel. According to Kisire, these stoves are designed to drastically reduce firewood consumption, which will alleviate the physical toll on women who spend hours gathering fuel and help families save money that would otherwise be spent on energy costs.

"This is not just about stoves; it is about changing lives," said Kisire. "These energy-saving solutions provide a practical way to combat climate change at the local level while improving the daily efficiency of our households."

The workshop offered the participants hands-on training, allowing them to gain technical proficiency in building the stoves using locally available materials. The enthusiasm among the attendees was palpable, as many women expressed relief at the prospect of spending less time and effort on cooking.

As the training concludes, organizers anticipate a positive ripple effect throughout Kateta Sub-county. With the newly acquired skills, participants are expected to act as ambassadors for environmental conservation within their communities, promoting sustainable practices that protect the local ecosystem for future generations.

Hon. Acom pledged to continue supporting such grassroots initiatives, signaling a sustained effort to prioritize women’s engagement in the district’s transition toward sustainable and efficient living.
