The driver of the Kakise bus that was involved in a horrific crash over the weekend has succumbed to his injuries.
Ekongo Alfred, popularly known by his alias "Mandev," breathed his last this afternoon at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.
Alfred was at the wheel of the Kakise passenger bus, registration number UAS 159P, travelling from Soroti to Kampala on Saturday night. At approximately 11:30PM, the bus veered off the road and violently crashed into a bridge at Television center in Opuyo Ward in Soroti City.
Following the impact, Alfred and two other passengers sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders rushed the victims to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where medical personnel fought to save the driver's life, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.
The tragic passing of the driver has cast a pall of grief over the transport community and the families of those affected by the weekend accident. Further updates regarding funeral arrangements are expected from family and colleagues in the coming days.
