The National Unity Platform (NUP) has vowed not to field a candidate in the Serere county Parliamentary by-election but rather back the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) candidate Alice Alaso.
Speaking to journalists this morning, Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson said in the spirit of working together as the opposition, they agreed to support Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) candidate Alice Alaso.
It should also be noted that ANT decided to field Alaso who was once the woman MP for Soroti district and Serere district.
Alaso pledged to offer effective representation, act as a unifying factor to the divided Serere region, and be an advocate in defending human rights.
“As you know we lost a leader and the process is a constitutional process. My commitment is that they (Serere people) will be well represented in the Parliament of Uganda,” Alaso said.
It should also be noted that Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) where Alaso was a Kingpin before she decamped and joined ANT also fielded a candidate despite the fact that the Alliance National for Transformation (ANT) had asked their fellow Opposition to back their candidate.
While unveiling Emmanuel Eratu as the FDC candidate for Serere Country MP by-election Amuriat revealed that the party will not back Alaso because ANT members left FDC under irreconcilable differences.
According to the roadmap announced by the Electoral Commission, the nomination of candidates will be conducted on February 9 and 10, 2023, at the Office of the District Returning Officer, Serere.
Nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings for nine (9) days, that is, from February 13 to `February 21, 2023.
Polling and tallying of results for the by-election of Member of Parliament will be conducted on February 23, 2023.
