Police ban belated women's day celebrations for Soroti City

The Soroti City planned women's day celebrations slated to take place on Friday 14th,2023 at the Soroti sports ground have been banned from taking place by the territorial police force in East Kyoga.

 

According to a press statement released this evening by SP Ageca Oscar Gregg the PRO of East Kyoga, they have received credible information of a planned women's day celebration that's to take place on the 14th day of April 2023 and are in concert with the city authority body that seized with the management of the venue has been notified but the authority is not able to hold and has consequently not given the requisite authority for the said celebration at this material time.

 

"We want to inform the organizers of the said event that the use of illegal processions has the potential of massively disrupting the other rights of the community, through disruptions in the flow of traffic, breach of peace, looting of shops and roadside market shops, mugging and theft of phones from bystanders and pedestrians, running battles with security personnel and provocative behavior like burning of tyres etc",

 

Ageca also added that they have informed the organizers that it's unfortunate as the celebration contravenes the legal regimes that govern public gatherings, assemblies, and celebrations 

 

"The police, will use their discretionary powers in policing any unlawful assemblies. The police of Soroti City have been tasked to remain vigilant and use all lawful and reasonable methods to disperse and disrupt any unlawful assembly should any actors decide to hold the same", he added.

 

It should also be noted that Hon.Joan Alobo the Soroti city woman MP called upon the public to ignore the fake news that Soroti Women's Day celebrations have been postponed as the celebration date still remains for Friday,14th at Soroti Sports ground and public gardens urging them to turn up in big numbers.

 

"Treat information about the cancellation as unprovoked gender-based violence", she added.
