The Ugandan music fraternity is in deep mourning following the tragic death of legendary singer, saxophonist, and Afrigo Band founding member Moses Matovu.
Matovu was attacked and killed on Thursday morning, September 24, 2026.
According to preliminary reports and confirmation from the Uganda Police, the iconic musician was assaulted by unknown assailants in the Kibuli Market Zone B, located in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
Following the attack, Matovu was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for emergency medical attention, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and breathed his last.
Police at Kabalagala have officially registered a case of suspected murder. A task team of investigators was immediately deployed to the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Matovu’s death marks a dark day for the country’s cultural landscape. Born on June 19, 1949, in Kawempe, Matovu was a towering figure in East African music. He began his illustrious career in 1967 with the Thunderbirds Band before going on to co-found the legendary Afrigo Band in 1975. As the longest-surviving musical group in Uganda, Afrigo Band, under Matovu's stewardship, became a national treasure, defining generations of soukous, jazz, and afro-pop music.
Tributes continue to pour in from across the continent as fans, fellow artists, and leaders grapple with the sudden and violent loss of one of Africa’s most cherished musical icons.
