Police in Kampala have detained a woman as investigations continue into the death of Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band, following an early-morning incident at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division.
According to a police statement issued on Thursday, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30 a.m.
Police said that as Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence, they were allegedly confronted by a male suspect who is reported to have previously been in a relationship with the woman.
The woman was subsequently arrested and remains in police custody, where she is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigation.
Police said preliminary information suggests the incident may have followed a physical altercation, but stressed that the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu's subsequent death have not yet been fully established.
Matovu sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider. He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The male suspect has reportedly been positively identified but is believed to have fled the scene. Police said they are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and establish the circumstances surrounding the musician's death.
Investigators are continuing to verify accounts from those connected to the incident, with police saying further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and allow detectives to carry out their work without interference.
Matovu's death has left his family, colleagues, friends and fans mourning the musician, with police extending condolences to those affected by his death.
