NGORA - A retired soldier attached to the UPDF is reported to be on the run following an incident where a tragic grenade blast resulted in the death of one male juvenile and serious injuries to another.

The incident occurred on June 12, 2024, at approximately 1600 hours in Opege Village, Kopege Parish, Odwarat Sub-County, Ngora District.

Preliminary findings indicate that the grenade detonated in the house of Obwin John, a retired UPDF officer who had kept the grenade in his house for some time which led to the death of Okello John Bosco, aged 14, a P.4 pupil at Kopege Primary School, and caused serious injuries to Esimu Sam.

Esimu was rushed to Ngora Fred Carr Hospital for treatment, and the body of the deceased was transported to Ngora Health Center IV for a postmortem examination.

According to a press statement by ASP Obukulem Edison, the acting PRO of East Kyoga, additional suspected grenades were discovered dumped behind Obwin's house following the blast.

"Currently, Obwin John, the retired UPDF officer and suspect in this case, is at large, and no arrests have been made. The police are actively searching for him and request the public to remain calm and vigilant," he added.

The police in Ngora have commenced investigations into the case with case file CRB:211/2024 opened at Ngora CPS.
