Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has made waves with recent public statements targeting Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, a prominent officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a series of social media posts, General Muhoozi openly criticized Lt. Gen. Elwelu, raising questions about his leadership and role within the military.
In one of the statements posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, General Muhoozi referred to Lt. Gen. Elwelu as “a buffoon,” adding, “He is completely unworthy of our great Army! He better run as fast as his small legs can carry him.”
These remarks came shortly after a cryptic post in which General Muhoozi mentioned plans to apprehend an individual whom he described as a “fool hiding behind my father,” further claiming that the individual hailed from the Teso region. Although no names were mentioned initially, subsequent posts suggested that Lt. Gen. Elwelu, who is from Teso, was the subject of the criticism.
Background and Context
Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu is a high-ranking officer in the UPDF and has served in various capacities, including as the former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces. Known for his role in high-profile military operations, Lt. Gen. Elwelu has been a central figure in Uganda’s defense leadership.
General Muhoozi’s public criticisms are the latest in a series of outspoken comments directed at political and military figures. In April 2023, he made headlines for referring to opposition leader Bobi Wine as a “buffoon,” which led to the cancellation of a proposed meeting between the two.
While Lt. Gen. Elwelu has not issued a public response to the remarks, the incident has sparked speculation about internal tensions within the UPDF leadership.
The Ministry of Defence and UPDF have yet to issue an official statement regarding the controversy.
