Soroti City has seen a significant shift in leadership following the official handover of office by Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Peter Pex Paak to his successor, James Small Chemutai, who now assumes the position in an acting capacity.
Chemutai, who previously served as the Deputy RCC for Soroti City’s Western Division, was elevated to the acting role after Paak stepped down to pursue political aspirations. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chemutai expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him and attributed his appointment to divine providence.
“This is a responsibility I take seriously,” he said. “With God’s guidance, I will work hand in hand with leaders across all political affiliations to ensure that government programs are inclusive and responsive to the needs of every citizen.”
Outgoing RCC Peter Pex Paak has served Soroti City since September 2021. Reflecting on his tenure, Paak highlighted his efforts to promote unity and cooperation among the region’s diverse political leadership.
“I leave Soroti with a sense of accomplishment,” he remarked. “I’ve worked harmoniously with all leaders regardless of party lines. As I embark on this next chapter, I remain committed to serving my people with even greater energy.”
Paak is now preparing to contest for the parliamentary seat of Dodoth East County in Kaabong District. He cited the need for active and effective representation as a key driver of his decision to enter elective politics.
“I believe my community deserves a voice that can bring real change,” he said. “The current MP has not delivered as expected. I am stepping forward to fix that.” Paak added
The transition comes at a time when Soroti City continues to position itself as a growing urban hub in Eastern Uganda. Both Chemutai and Paak emphasized the importance of continuity, collaboration, and people-centered leadership as the city moves forward under new stewardship.
