Grammy Award-winning American singer Lionel Richie will headline a landmark music concert in Gulu City, Uganda, this June, aimed at promoting climate action and cultural empowerment.
The announcement was made by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, officially launching preparations for the highly anticipated event.
"Lionel Richie is coming to Gulu in June. And Sister Sledge is also going to be performing in the same concert," Minister Mao revealed. "Why Gulu? Because this concert is about repairing the world. It’s about climate change. It’s about uniting the world."
The concert is positioned as a pivotal event within a larger global movement with ambitious goals: raising awareness about climate change through the universal language of music and art, empowering local businesses by stimulating economic growth for vendors, hospitality services, transportation providers, and entrepreneurs, and nurturing youth and creative talent by providing a platform for local artists, musicians, and filmmakers to showcase their talent on a global stage.
Gulu City has recently emerged as a vibrant hub for entertainment in Uganda, having hosted several international performers in recent months, including Rudeboy and Sabinus. The addition of Lionel Richie and Sister Sledge further solidifies Gulu's growing reputation as a premier destination for international events.
The concert promises to be a significant boost for the local economy and a powerful platform for promoting climate action on a global scale.
