As Uganda's political landscape gears up for the upcoming elections, two prominent figures within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have officially declared their intentions to vie for key leadership positions.
Flight Captain Mike Mukula, the incumbent NRM Vice Chairman for the Eastern Region, announced his bid for re-election for the 2025-2030 term. He made this declaration through a poster on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, "We are officially on." Mukula has held this position since 2015 and seeks to continue his tenure by consolidating support within the Eastern Region. In the previous election, Mukula secured victory by defeating former Tororo Municipality MP, Sanjay Tanna, to retain his position.
In a parallel development, Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua also declared his candidacy for the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda.
Obua made his announcement on February 9, 2025, via a video posted on his personal X account, expressing his desire to serve in this capacity. He emphasized his vision to "consolidate the gains and achievements of NRM in Northern Region." Obua currently serves as the chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus and has been instrumental in coordinating the government's legislative agenda.
As the NRM prepares for its internal elections, the declarations by Mukula and Obua set the stage for a competitive electoral season. Party members and political analysts anticipate that more contenders may emerge, further intensifying the race for these influential positions within the ruling party.
