Soroti City — Excitement is building across the Teso sub-region as preparations intensify to welcome David Calvin Echodu, a prominent NRM aspirant whose entry into the political arena has sparked a wave of support and optimism for renewed leadership in Eastern Uganda.
Local NRM leaders from multiple districts have thrown their weight behind Echodu, citing his grassroots understanding, humility, and commitment to addressing longstanding challenges in the region. A grand procession and rally are scheduled to take place from Awoja to Soroti city, complete with cultural performances, entertainment by national and local artists, and appearances from top dignitaries.
Peter Edeku Edepu, the interim head of mobilization and chairperson of Echodu’s organizing committee, confirmed that support for Echodu continues to grow exponentially.
“We have secured full backing from 8 out of the 11 NRM district chairpersons in Teso, as well as national endorsements from all 17 NRM regions across the country,” Edeku revealed.
“This is not just a reception—it’s a declaration that the people of Teso are ready for change.”
Edeku added that Calvin Echodu represents a shift from rhetoric to action and believes that if given the mandate, he will revitalize the region's political and socio-economic landscape.
The event, which is expected to attract thousands of people, comes at a time when growing discontent has been voiced against the long-serving NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, Capt. Mike Mukula. Several leaders have publicly criticized his 20-year reign, accusing him of stagnating progress in Teso and failing to unite the party or deliver meaningful change.
Among those advocating for new leadership is Isaac Okello Omiat, the NRM Chairperson for Amuria District, who praised Echodu’s down-to-earth nature and understanding of key community issues, particularly his advocacy for cattle compensation.
“As a herdsman, Calvin speaks to the heart of our people. He’s not just talking—he’s already pushing for things that matter. We’re ready to walk kilometers to welcome him,” Omiat said.
Opio John Richard Edeket, the NRM Chairperson for Katakwi District, was equally vocal, saying that Echodu’s entry marks a critical turning point.
“Calvin’s presence is exposing the weaknesses of the incumbent. There have been years of infighting and ineffective mobilization. Teso needs a unifying force, and Calvin is that person,” he said.
The welcome event is being viewed not just as a celebration of an individual but as a symbol of a larger movement for leadership renewal within the NRM and across Teso. Organizers are encouraging the public to attend in large numbers and witness what they describe as the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s political journey.
As momentum continues to build, all eyes are now on Soroti, where the homecoming celebration may well set the tone for the next phase of political transformation in Teso and beyond.
