Twelve individuals accused alongside Soroti City Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Joan Alobo, in the alleged burning of Jozan Nursery and Primary School are set to learn their fate on May 29, 2025, as the Soroti Chief Magistrate’s Court prepares to deliver a ruling on their bail application.
The suspects have remained on remand since their arrest, while MP Alobo was granted bail in an earlier proceeding. The case, which stems from an arson attack on the school located in Soroti City East Division, has attracted public scrutiny and sparked calls for swift justice.
During a court session held on Thursday, Her Worship Hilda Bakanansa Walaga announced that the ruling on the bail application would be delivered later this month. Defense counsel Moses Okot Bitek Junior presented sureties for the accused, arguing that they pose no risk of fleeing and are willing to comply with court conditions.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Bitek expressed cautious optimism. “We have fulfilled all legal requirements and believe the court will consider the constitutional right to bail. We are hopeful for a favorable ruling,” he said.
The prosecution alleges that the twelve, together with MP Alobo, were involved in a coordinated act of arson that severely damaged the school.
As the community awaits the court’s decision, families of the accused and civil society groups have called for a fair and timely judicial process.
The ruling will be delivered in open court on May 29, 2025.
