The Serere District Local Government has officially launched rehabilitation works on the 6-kilometer Ongiji-Opure Landsite road in Atiira Sub-county, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving accessibility and easing transportation challenges in the area.

Funded by the Uganda Road Fund through the central government, the project has received a total allocation of UGX 116 million. According to Osako Tobias, the Serere District Road Inspector, the rehabilitation works will include spot murraming, compaction, the installation of 21 culverts, and tree planting along the road corridor to enhance durability and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the launch event, Osako emphasized the importance of proper road usage and community cooperation. “We call upon the community to use this road carefully. Over-speeding is dangerous and can lead to accidents and road damage,” he cautioned.

Serere District Local Council V Chairperson, Steven Ocola, addressed residents during the ceremony, stressing the need for community responsibility in maintaining the road. “Let’s avoid misusing the road, such as dragging ox ploughs along it, which can create potholes and reduce its lifespan,” he warned.

Ocola also reaffirmed his commitment to improving infrastructure across the district. “So far, we have managed to construct good roads throughout Serere. This is just one of the many projects aimed at transforming our transport network,” he added.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the project with appreciation. Elweu Moses, LC1 Chairperson of Ogoro Village, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community. “We are thankful to the Serere district authorities. This road was in a terrible state. With its improvement, movement of people and goods will become easier,” he said.

Once completed, the rehabilitation of the Ongiji-Opure Landsite road is expected to boost local trade, improve access to schools and health facilities, and significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of Atiira and surrounding areas.
