SOROTI — The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Electoral Commission in Soroti District has officially kicked off the nomination process for aspiring candidates vying for various local government positions, as part of the party’s roadmap toward the 2026 general elections.

On the first day of nominations, held on June 12, the Commission cleared 322 candidates for the LC1 positions out of over 500 who had picked nomination forms. Soroti District comprises 377 villages, each expected to produce a candidate, along with 48 parishes which will elect 48 LC2s and corresponding parish councilors.

According to Joyce Mary Akello, the FDC Chairperson of the Electoral Commission in Soroti District, nominations for LC1, LC2, and parish councilors will run from June 12 to 13. Nominations for Members of Parliament and district chairpersons are scheduled for June 16–17.

Akello further revealed that Soroti District has 12 sub-counties. So far, only five LC3 aspirants—representing Aukot, Gweri, Kamuda, Katine, and Asuret sub-counties—have been successfully nominated. She indicated that most sub-counties will hold party primaries for the LC3 positions, signaling a vibrant and competitive internal democratic process.

Among the notable aspirants is Emmanuel Ocen, the FDC flag bearer for LC3 chairperson in Tubur Sub-county. Upon his nomination, Ocen pledged to prioritize improvements in education and healthcare, sectors he described as critically underdeveloped in the area. He stressed the importance of collaboration with government structures to bring meaningful development to the community.

Also nominated is Simon Peter Opolot, the incumbent LC3 chairperson of Gweri Sub-county. Despite a recent assassination attempt, Opolot remains in the race and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Gweri.
