SOROTI DISTRICT – As political campaigns gain momentum ahead of the 2026 general elections, Joshua Okello, the duly nominated Member of Parliament aspirant for Gweri Constituency, has expressed strong confidence in winning the parliamentary seat. Running on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, Okello has positioned himself as a principled candidate focused on democracy, development, and people-centered leadership.
In an exclusive interview, Okello reaffirmed his commitment to the democratic process and credited his campaign’s strength to the support of the people and divine guidance. He emphasized that his motivation to lead stems from a calling to serve and uplift the people of Gweri.
“We are in NRM, and we stand for democracy, pan-Africanism, and love for our country,” Okello said. “Let us stay strong and united. We will overcome those who think money can override the will of the people.”
Okello raised concerns over what he described as growing attempts by some individuals to manipulate the electoral process through financial influence. However, he remained resolute, declaring that such efforts would not derail his mission to deliver servant leadership.
“I am confident of beating the rich. Let them come with money if they want, but I urge the people—take the money if you must, but give me the mandate to lead,” he stated.
His remarks highlight a wider concern shared by many voters and reform-minded candidates in Uganda— the corrosive role of vote-buying and monetized politics. Okello urged voters to resist short-term incentives and instead prioritize long-term development and effective representation.
Throughout his campaign, Okello has emphasized transparency, community engagement, and ideological clarity as the pillars of his leadership style. His message resonates strongly with sections of the electorate who are seeking candidates rooted in integrity and committed to grassroots transformation.
With Gweri Constituency expected to be a key battleground in Soroti District, Okello is positioning himself as a frontrunner in the race. His approach combines ideological conviction with a deep understanding of the constituency’s challenges and aspirations.
The NRM primaries and general elections are scheduled to take place under Uganda’s 2026 electoral calendar. As political interest in the Gweri race intensifies, Joshua Okello’s bold stance against vote-buying and his people-first message are shaping him into a candidate to watch.
