Soroti District — In a commendable effort to promote girls' education and menstrual hygiene, Eema Center Soroti, a local non-governmental organization, has donated sanitary pads to Amoroto Primary School in Awaliwal Sub-county.
The initiative, spearheaded by Sarah Akello, Director of Eema Center Soroti, aims to address the critical challenges that schoolgirls face due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products. According to Akello, many girls are forced to miss school during their periods, which affects their academic performance and self-esteem.
“By providing sanitary pads, we hope to ensure that no girl is left behind simply because of a natural biological process,” said Akello. “We encourage learners to speak to their senior woman teacher when menstruating so they can receive the support they need.”
The donation to Amoroto P/S is part of a wider campaign by Eema Center Soroti, which has already reached several sub-counties across Soroti District. The organization’s efforts are not only improving hygiene but also empowering girls to stay in school and pursue their education confidently.
Pr. Richard Ochen, Manager of Eema Center Soroti, underscored the broader social impact of menstrual hygiene support. “When girls don’t have access to sanitary products, they become vulnerable to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including early relationships with boys. Providing these essentials helps protect them and keeps them focused on their education,” he said.
At the donation event, Samuel Adoku, Deputy Head Teacher of Amoroto P/S, highlighted some of the ongoing challenges the school faces, including inadequate bathing and changing facilities for girls. He expressed hope that this donation would be a starting point for more comprehensive support to meet the needs of female learners.
Local leaders also welcomed the gesture. Peter Ebau, LC3 Chairperson of Awaliwal Sub-county, praised the Eema Center for its commitment to community development. “This initiative is a big boost to our efforts to keep girls in school. We appreciate the support and look forward to more partnerships like this,” he said.
The students of Amoroto Primary School were visibly grateful, expressing joy and relief at receiving the much-needed supplies. Many said the pads would give them greater comfort and confidence during school days.
Eema Center Soroti’s initiative represents a vital step in tackling the stigma and practical challenges of menstruation in schools, ensuring that more girls can pursue their education without interruption.
