In a bold move to expand its political footprint in Eastern Uganda, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially launched its mobilization structures in Soroti City, signaling a strategic campaign to dismantle the long-standing influence of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The launch event, held at the NUP offices in Soroti City, drew a wide array of participants including party leaders, aspiring parliamentary candidates, grassroots mobilizers, and supporters from across the Teso sub-region. The initiative marks a significant milestone in NUP’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence at the local level and position itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party.

Speaking at the event, Ocailap Michael Akwabai, the NUP parliamentary aspirant for Ngariam County, criticized the NRM government for failing to address key development challenges in the region.

“We are committed to building a people-centered government—one that ensures equal access to quality education, healthcare, and inclusive development. The NRM has had 40 years but failed the people,” Ocailap said.

Ocailap emphasized that NUP’s mission is grounded in inclusive governance, economic justice, and empowerment for all Ugandans, regardless of region or social class.

The event’s guest of honour, Dr. Moses Kanabi, NUP’s National Organizing Secretary, urged the newly inaugurated mobilizers to remain steadfast and unified in their efforts to bring political transformation to Uganda.

“This is not just a campaign—it’s a movement. The NRM has ruled for decades with no tangible improvement in people’s lives. They serve their own interests. But NUP stands with the people, and we will not be swallowed like other parties,” Kanabi declared.

George William Okoit, NUP Chairperson for Soroti City, noted that the newly launched structures will play a pivotal role in voter education, political training, and community outreach.

“We are building a strong, coordinated network of mobilizers across Soroti. Our goal is to equip them with the leadership skills and strategies necessary to challenge the ruling party effectively,” he stated. “NUP is no longer a stranger in Soroti City—we have fronted candidates in nearly every constituency.”

In a show of growing support, Ocen Julius, Chairperson of the Teso War Victims Association, officially joined the NUP, citing the party’s commitment to justice and equality.

“The NRM has robbed Ugandans of justice for far too long. Even the High Court recently ruled in our favor against the government. NUP is not just for the youth—it is for all who believe in a better Uganda,” Ocen asserted.

Okware Jonathan, NUP’s Regional Coordinator for Teso, called on mobilizers to stay focused and disciplined as the 2026 elections approach.

“This is not a time for fear. We are confronting a system of dictatorship, and we must do so with strength and unity. The time for change is now,” he affirmed.

With the establishment of its mobilization infrastructure and a rising base of regional support, the National Unity Platform is emerging as a formidable political force in Eastern Uganda. As the 2026 elections draw closer, NUP’s expansion into historically NRM-dominated territories may set the stage for one of the most competitive electoral contests in recent Ugandan history.
