Amuria District — The political future of Hon. Musa Francis Ecweru, Uganda’s State Minister for Works, hangs in the balance after a surprising loss in the NRM party primaries to first-time contender Samuel Ediau in Amuria County.
Ediau, a relatively new figure on the political scene in the NRM party who defected from the UPC party, garnered 29,352 votes, while Minister Ecweru — also the NRM District Chairperson and the incumbent MP for Amuria County — trailed with 19,977 votes, marking a significant political upset that has sent shockwaves across the Teso Sub-region and national political circles.
The defeat ends Ecweru’s over two-decade tenure as the Member of Parliament for Amuria, a role he has held since the early 2000s. Known for his strong presence in government and grassroots influence, Ecweru had long been considered one of the most formidable figures in eastern Uganda’s political landscape.
Analysts attribute Ediau’s victory to growing public demand for change and fresh leadership. Many constituents — especially youth — reportedly resonated more with Ediau’s message of renewed engagement and community-focused leadership.
With his ministerial role still intact for now, Ecweru faces a period of uncertainty. While he remains in Cabinet, losing the party flag for the upcoming 2026 general elections casts doubt on his continued political relevance. It remains unclear whether he will opt to run as an independent candidate, step away from elective politics entirely, or reposition himself for a role within the party’s national structures.
In contrast, Samuel Ediau’s victory cements his status as a rising political figure in Teso, earning him both local admiration and national attention. He now moves forward as the NRM flag bearer for Amuria County in the forthcoming elections.
