KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has formally endorsed Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. The decision follows a series of internal consultations and reconciliation efforts spearheaded by senior party leaders and elders.
This endorsement signals a strategic realignment within the FDC as it works to reinforce its position as Uganda’s leading opposition party. Mafabi's candidacy emerges in the wake of FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s withdrawal from the presidential race—a move seen as a unifying gesture and a step toward fostering internal harmony.
Amuriat, who was the party’s presidential flag bearer in the 2021 elections, is now expected to shift his political focus to Kumi District, where he plans to contest for the Kanyumu County parliamentary seat.
Party insiders reveal that the agreement to front Mafabi was reached after weeks of high-level consultations aimed at healing internal rifts and presenting a unified front ahead of the 2026 elections.
Mafabi, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Budadiri West, is widely respected for his advocacy on governance and accountability. His selection is expected to energize the party’s support base, especially in the eastern region where he maintains strong grassroots appeal.
Political analysts suggest that Mafabi’s candidacy could significantly influence the electoral dynamics, as the FDC positions itself to challenge both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and other rising opposition forces.
The party is set to officially launch Mafabi’s campaign in the coming months as preparations for the 2026 elections continue to gain pace.
