Seasoned journalist Eninu Edward on Thursday officially entered the increasingly crowded race for the Kasilo County parliamentary seat, picking up his nomination forms from the Electoral Commission offices in Serere District. Running as an independent candidate with a radio as his symbol, Eninu is positioning himself as a fresh voice for the constituency.
Dressed in a distinctive multi-pocket press vest, Mr. Eninu is seeking to unseat one of the region's longest-serving legislators, the incumbent Hon. Elijah Okupa, who has represented Kasilo County in Parliament since 2001.
Eninu’s challenge is centered on a call for new leadership, directly referencing the incumbent’s long tenure. "Today marks another milestone in our journey to Parliament," he stated. "We need change to break through the 25 years of poor, repressive leadership."
The race for the Kasilo seat is shaping up to be a tight contest, having drawn over six aspirants. So far, others who have also picked nomination forms include fellow independents Moses Edonu and James Emaju, FDC. The wider field of aspirants also includes Emaju Peter Paul of the ruling NRM party, Ebiau Peter Carlos of the DF party, and another independent candidate, James Peter Akol.
At the heart of Eninu's campaign is a message of grassroots empowerment. "Our people from the landing sites, gardens, trading centres, and all villages should be empowered," he said. "It is time to fight for our rights to productive fishing, gainful agriculture, improved education, and better health services for our people."
After completing the formalities at the district headquarters, Mr. Eninu departed for his home village of Owarakwap to begin his grassroots mobilisation efforts.
"Eninu Edward is the answer," he declared confidently to his supporters. "Let's mobilize."
