Iganga, Uganda — The National Unity Platform (NUP) party president and presidential candidate, Bobi Wine, has announced that his campaign team has been blocked from proceeding to campaign in Iganga Municipality.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Bobi Wine expressed frustration over what he described as selective enforcement by local authorities. “We have been blocked from proceeding to Iganga for our campaigns! Although two other presidential candidates have so far campaigned in Iganga Municipality, the RDC, RPC, and DPC in Iganga have insisted that we must not campaign in Iganga Municipality,” he wrote.
He further explained that the intimidation started with venue owners being pressured not to allow the NUP campaign events. Despite these efforts, the campaign team managed to secure Oxford High School playground as a venue. However, on the morning of the planned event, officials allegedly intensified their opposition, insisting that no campaign activities should take place anywhere in the municipality.
Bobi Wine also condemned the poor condition of the alternative routes provided by the authorities, describing them as “long, dusty roads” intended to hinder the campaign. He accused security personnel of coming “armed to the teeth” with the intent to “injure or kill” his supporters.
Due to these circumstances, the NUP candidate announced the postponement of his Iganga campaign. He called on the Electoral Commission to intervene, urging them to clarify why other presidential candidates are allowed to campaign freely in Iganga Municipality while the NUP is being blocked.
“We hope to engage the Electoral Commission so they make it clear that I and the National Unity Platform are now allowed to campaign in Iganga Municipality while other candidates campaign there!” Bobi Wine stated.
