Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has expressed sympathy for traders affected by the Kapchorwa Central Market fire that occurred earlier this year.
On January, 2025, a devastating fire gutted the market, leaving approximately 700 traders with losses worth millions of shillings.
Addressing a campaign rally at Kapchorwa Boma grounds, Nandala Mafabi criticized the government's handling of the situation, citing excessive taxation and lack of intervention to support low-income earners who lost their capital.
According to him, "f the government had insured the market, traders would have been compensated and continued with their businesses.
Mafabi promised to construct a new market if elected president, ensuring it would be insured to prevent similar situations in the future.
He outlined key aspects of the FDC manifesto, emphasizing equal opportunities for all, including teachers who he believes have been discriminated against by the current government.
The FDC leader's visit to Kapchorwa came as a surprise to security personnel, who had heavily guarded the dilapidated market site, possibly to prevent Nandala and his supporters from accessing it.
This event highlights the ongoing struggles of traders in Kapchorwa, who have been operating in precarious conditions since the fire, with many still awaiting government support to rebuild their businesses
