KABERAMAIDO — A teacher at Soroti Secondary School has died after he was knocked by a vehicle while riding a bicycle along the Soroti–Lira Highway in Kaberamaido District.
The deceased, identified as Angia Joseph, 48, was a resident of Oriamo Sub-county in Kaberamaido District and a teacher at Soroti Secondary School.
According to the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Haji Ibrahim Saiga, the fatal accident occurred on Tuesday at about 11:20 a.m. at Aoya B Village, Abalang Parish, Oriamo Sub-county.
Police said the crash involved a Toyota Wish registration number UBD 512A, driven by Dembi Paul, a resident of Mbale District.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling from Soroti City towards Lira when it knocked Angia, who was riding a bicycle along the highway.
“The cyclist sustained fatal injuries and died instantly at the scene,” ACP Saiga said in a statement.
The body was later conveyed to Kaberamaido Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police arrested the driver, who remains in custody as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety along major highways, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
Police have urged motorists and other road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution at all times.
“We urge all road users to exercise maximum caution, observe traffic regulations, and respect the rights of other road users, especially vulnerable groups such as cyclists and pedestrians,” ACP Saiga said.
Investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing.
