SOROTI CITY – Hundreds of mourners, including religious leaders, political figures, family members and friends, gathered at St. Peter's Cathedral, Soroti, today to pay their last respects to the late Rev. Mesulam Abilet, a revered Anglican priest, educator and community leader whose life of service touched generations across the Teso sub-region.
The requiem mass attracted a cross-section of dignitaries from the church, government and local communities, who joined the bereaved family in celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of the veteran clergyman.
Among those mourning the deceased was Serere County Member of Parliament Emmanuel Omoding, the late Rev. Abilet's grandson. Rev. Abilet was also the father of the late Bishop Patrick Okabe, the former Serere County Member of Parliament.
Speakers at the service described Rev. Abilet as a humble servant of God, an exemplary teacher and a dedicated mentor who devoted his life to advancing education, strengthening the Anglican Church and promoting unity within communities across Teso.
Born on October 14, 1938, at Abeko-Ogolai in present-day Amuria District, Rev. Abilet overcame early hardship after losing his father before he was born. He was baptized in 1948 and later answered God's call into ministry after beginning his career as a teacher.
Following pastoral training at Ngora Church of Uganda Evangelical College (Ngora DTC), he was ordained as a deacon and later as a priest. Throughout his ministry, he faithfully served in Obalanga, Orungo, Pingire, Kamod, Sapir, Atiira and Kyere parishes, earning admiration for his commitment to evangelism, pastoral care and spiritual mentorship.
Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Abilet played a key role in promoting education, serving as a head teacher before joining the clergy and later contributing to the management of several schools through Parent-Teacher Associations and Boards of Governors. Even after retiring from active ministry at the age of 65, he remained active in pastoral work, farming and community development.
He is survived by his wife, Toto Lucy Abilet, 13 children, 58 living grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren, leaving behind a family that continues to uphold the values of faith, education and service that defined his life.
Rev. Abilet passed away on June 25, 2026, after battling prostate cancer, hypertension and complications from two strokes. His health had deteriorated further following the death of his son, Bishop Patrick Okabe.
The late Rev. Mesulam Abilet will be laid to rest on Sunday at his ancestral home in Serere District, where family, friends and well-wishers are expected to gather for his final farewell.
Remembered as a devoted husband, father, priest, teacher and community leader, Rev. Abilet leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, selfless service and commitment to uplifting society through education and the Gospel.
