KAPELEBYONG - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has criticized the current leadership of the Teso sub-region for the poor state of road infrastructure, blaming mismanagement and corruption for the region’s deteriorating road network. The president made the remarks during his first rally in the Teso sub-region, held at St. Francis Secondary School in Kapelebyong District, where he addressed a large crowd of supporters despite heavy rainfall.
Museveni expressed disappointment that several key roads in the region remain in disrepair despite regular allocations of government funds for maintenance. He emphasized that the government consistently remits money to local governments for road upkeep, but alleged that corruption and misuse of these funds have hindered progress.
“There is always money sent for road maintenance, but I suspect that some leaders are misappropriating it. This must stop,” the president said, drawing applause from the audience.
Museveni assured the residents that his government would take immediate action to ensure the funds are used appropriately and that road works in the area are prioritized. He vowed to hold local leaders accountable and to strengthen monitoring mechanisms within local government structures to curb corruption.
The president also reiterated his commitment to improving infrastructure across Uganda, noting that good roads are vital for trade, agriculture, and service delivery. “When roads are in good condition, farmers can easily access markets, and development moves faster,” he added.
Despite the heavy downpour that welcomed him to Kapelebyong, Museveni’s supporters turned up in large numbers, chanting slogans of support. His visit marks the beginning of a series of engagements across the Teso sub region aimed at addressing key development challenges and reinforcing government programs for economic transformation.
