Born on 7th January 1935, the late Ocheger served in public administration during his lifetime, having worked with Soroti Local Government and Jinja Municipal Council before retiring in 1978. He is survived by a widow, seven children, forty-four grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. He was laid to rest at his ancestral home in a ceremony marked by dignity and respect.
The burial was attended by Vice President Jessica Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, NRM Vice Chairperson for the Eastern Region David Calvin Echodu, religious leaders, political figures, members of the public, and other stakeholders.
The funeral service was led by the Anglican Bishop of Kumi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Michael Okwii Esakan, who served as the chief celebrant. In his sermon, Bishop Esakan urged mourners to live respectful lives and to be good examples in their communities, reminding them that death is not the end of life but a transition to eternity.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Ambassador Nelson Ocheger narrated the late Ocheger’s final days, explaining that he initially recovered from malaria before falling ill again due to a bacterial infection. Although doctors had prepared discharge documents, his condition deteriorated suddenly, leading to breathing complications. He was placed on oxygen support and later passed on.
Addressing mourners, David Calvin Echodu thanked those who turned up in large numbers to support the family, noting that the deceased had lived a long and fulfilling life. He encouraged the public to embrace healthy living to promote longevity and urged continued support for the NRM.
As the chief mourner, Vice President Alupo delivered a condolence message from President Museveni and presented a condolence contribution of UGX 10 million to the family. In his message, the President described Mzee Ocheger as a hardworking and disciplined man who remained active even after retirement through agriculture and community engagement alongside his wife, Mama Janet Amora.
President Museveni praised the late Ocheger for raising a disciplined family that continues to contribute to national development and urged them to protect and build on the legacy he left behind.
Mzee Benjamin Ocheger will be remembered for his dedicated public service, strong family values, and lasting contribution to his community and country.
