Police in Soroti have arrested a Medical Records Officer attached to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital over allegations of extortion.

The suspect, identified as Mutebi Ronald, 38, is accused of demanding money from a patient’s attendant for medical services that are officially offered free of charge at the government facility. The incident reportedly occurred when a person from Amuria District brought her daughter to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the arrest, Ibrahim Saiga, the East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, said the complaint was formally lodged with police, prompting investigations that led to the officer’s apprehension. Authorities allege that the suspect solicited payment before facilitating access to treatment services.

Saiga emphasized that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the matter and to determine whether additional individuals could have been involved. He urged members of the public to report any cases of bribery, extortion, or misconduct by public servants, stressing the importance of accountability in public institutions.

The suspect remains in police custody as inquiries continue, with law enforcement reiterating its commitment to combating corruption in the health sector.
