Local authorities in Pallisa Town today conducted a major enforcement operation, seizing the property of vendors who failed to comply with a directive to relocate to designated markets.

The early morning exercise, led by the office of the Town Clerk, targeted traders who had continued to operate on streets, pavements, and verandas despite a week-long notice. The move is part of a broader government initiative to "streamline business operations and restore order within the town," according to officials.

The operation saw law enforcement officers, under police supervision, physically remove merchandise, makeshift stalls, and other property from undesignated areas.

The eviction follows a formal directive issued on March 10, 2026, by Pallisa Town Clerk, Mr. Aisu Jude Martins. The order mandated all local governments to clear urban areas of unauthorized trading activity and relocate vendors into gazetted markets.

Speaking on the enforcement, Mr. Martins stated that the action was a necessary step after traders ignored the given deadline.

"The directives were clear and were issued with ample time for compliance," Martins said. "They were designed to proceed as planned to ensure public order, safety, and the proper use of urban space. Our goal is not to punish traders but to create a structured and clean business environment for everyone. Those who have complied are operating without issue in the gazetted markets, and we encourage the affected individuals to move there immediately to reclaim their property and continue their businesses legally."

The government's new trade order aims to decongest town centers, improve traffic flow, and enhance sanitation. However, such operations often draw mixed reactions.

While some residents applaud the move for bringing orderliness, affected traders have expressed frustration over the loss of their high-foot-traffic locations and the perceived lack of adequate alternative spaces.

Authorities have indicated that the operation will be ongoing to prevent a return of illegal street vending and have urged all remaining non-compliant traders to voluntarily relocate to avoid further action.
