The political rise of Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau from an ordinary village girl in Serere District to the Woman Member of Parliament elect has become one of the most talked about political stories in the Teso sub-region.
Her journey to Uganda’s 12th Parliament is widely being described by supporters as a victory of resilience, determination, and the power of grassroots connection.
Throughout her campaigns, Acom consistently presented herself as a leader who understands the realities faced by ordinary people because she grew up within the same struggles.
Speaking during community engagements across Serere District, she often described herself as a village girl who knows the hardships of poverty, unemployment, and the daily challenges affecting women and youth.
Her political ambition was initially dismissed by some opponents who believed she could not pose a serious challenge to the established political leadership in the district.
Acom first entered the race through the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, where she competed against former Minister Hellen Adoa, who had served two terms as Woman MP for Serere District.
Although she failed to secure the NRM flag amid allegations of irregularities in the primaries, Acom refused to abandon her dream. Instead, she intensified her mobilization efforts and carried her campaign into the general elections, where her message gained overwhelming support from voters across the district.
Many residents viewed her as a fresh voice capable of addressing the concerns of ordinary citizens. Despite facing criticism, political pressure, and negativity from rivals, Acom remained focused and used every challenge as motivation to continue pushing forward.
Her eventual victory marked a major political shift in Serere District, ending the long-serving leadership of Hellen Adoa and ushering in a new chapter of representation.
Esther Lucy Acom Ajokotau will be sworn in on 13th, Wednesday as the Woman Member of Parliament for Serere District in Uganda’s 12th Parliament, cementing a journey that many now describe as both historic and inspiring.
