Police authorities have issued a nationwide appeal to all educational institutions to prohibit the unauthorized charging of electronic devices in dormitories and hostels following a fire incident at Mukura Union Visionary Primary and Secondary School in Ngora District.
The fire broke out in a girls' dormitory at the school, causing significant property damage but fortunately resulting in no injuries or fatalities, according to preliminary police reports.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told reporters that investigations indicate the fire originated from a mobile phone that was left charging unattended in the dormitory. While the exact circumstances remain under investigation, the incident has highlighted serious safety vulnerabilities in student accommodation facilities across the country.
"This incident could have been catastrophic," Rusoke stated. "We are grateful that no lives were lost, but the damage to property was substantial. This serves as a wake-up call for all schools to reassess their safety protocols, particularly regarding the use of electrical appliances in dormitory settings."
The Mukura Union Vision Christian school incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of safety standards in educational institutions throughout Uganda, where many boarding facilities struggle to balance convenience with fire prevention requirements.
Police are now calling upon school administrators to implement stricter controls on how and where electronic devices may be charged. Authorities recommend installation of fire fighting equipments in schools.
The Police Fire and Rescue Services have also recommended that schools conduct regular safety drills to ensure that both students and staff are prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations.
