Katakwi District - Two young children are in critical condition following a suspected explosion involving an unidentified metallic object in Pupes Village, Okore Sub-county, in Katakwi District. Police have launched investigations into what authorities believe could be a deliberately placed or unexploded device.
According to the East Kyoga Regional Police, the incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
Police spokesperson ASP Ibrahim Saiga confirmed that the victims, identified as Ariko Jane (6) and Otim James (4), were playing outside their home when they discovered a metallic object.
Preliminary reports indicate that the children began handling the object, which suddenly exploded, producing flames and thick smoke. Both victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment. Their exact medical condition has not yet been officially disclosed, though they are reported to be in critical condition.
Lt Nasser Sabilla Siya, who is part of the investigative team, said preliminary assessments suggest the device may have been deliberately thrown into the compound rather than originating from military activity or training exercises.
He noted that the School of Artillery and Air Defence at Olilim confirmed no live firing exercises were underway at the time of the incident.
Authorities further reported that a suspect has been identified and is currently being pursued as part of ongoing investigations.
Local leaders have expressed concern over the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
Philip Obwakori urged security agencies to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion and ensure the safety of residents.
“We want a comprehensive investigation so that the community can know what exactly happened and prevent similar incidents in future,” he said.
The children’s mother, Ketty Adeke, said she was inside the house when she heard a loud explosion.
“I rushed outside and found my children covered in dust and bleeding,” she recounted emotionally.
Medical personnel treating the victims confirmed that metallic fragments were removed from their bodies during treatment.
Police have urged residents in Katakwi District and surrounding areas to remain vigilant and avoid touching any unknown metallic or suspicious objects.
Authorities emphasized that such items should be immediately reported to security agencies for safe disposal.
