Vice President of Uganda, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, has launched the growing of perennial crops such as Coffee, Banana and Cocoa Promotion Programme in the Teso Sub-region, calling on farmers to embrace portable agriculture to boost the household economy.
The campaign, launched at Katakwi District Headquarters on Saturday 27-6-2026 under the theme “Coffee for Wealth Creation and Household Commercialization,” aims to accelerate coffee and cocoa production across eleven districts eg Katakwi, Kumi, Bukedea, Amuria, Kapelebyong, Soroti, Serere, Ngora, Kalaki, Kaberemaido and others.
Addressing farmers, district leaders, agricultural extension workers and RDCs, Alupo said Uganda’s future economic transformation depends on shifting households from subsistence farming to portable agriculture.
"We can not transform the household by lamenting or speeches but we need to have focus and plan to change our earnings" she said.
She noted that, the economy has been driven by the other agricultural food crops but we need to embrace the money economy agriculture.
Alupo urged the people of Teso to change from substance agriculture to commercial farming in order to achieve in their households status.
She urges the extension works, Teso leaders, stakeholders to come up and drives the implementation of coffee growing in the region.
"Teso sub region has been taking cotton as their cash crop after we reallied on Cassava, G-nuts, sogum, potatoes which has not brought any change in poverty eradication at the region" she said
She added that, the government has plan to make over 20m tonnes in the vision 2030.
Alupo said that, the government is has already disburse 80m seedlings for the 11 districts of the region.
"Coffee, Banana and Cocoa need adequate monsure during the time flowering, and asked the farmers to use bottles for irrigation system" she added.
Hon Calvin Echodu MP Soroti city west who doubles as Vice chairman NRM Eastern Uganda, saying on behind of the party we going to continue supporting poverty eradication in Teso by the distribution of seedlings.
Minister of Agriculture, Hon Frank Tumembanzi assured the people in Teso total support in agriculture.
The minister urged the leader more so LCV to join hands together and start monitoring the government programs to see that poverty must be eradicated from households.
