KAYUNGA - Prayers resumed on Sunday at Bugonya Church of Uganda in Kayonza Sub-county, Kayunga District after a spiritual cleansing was done on the altar where a couple were last week caught having sex.
Christians from the Anglican church had vowed not to return to the church until it was cleansed after a Catholic man and a Muslim woman were caught red-handed in the Wednesday 8pm act.
The two love birds upon being arrested by locals were then dragged half-naked to the residence of the village chairperson, Mr George William Kanda, who recorded a case of adultery, but were later set free with a pending case registered at the local council authorities.
However, speaking to this website on Sunday, the Church Lay Leader and Priest Head, Mr Aaron Komugisha, said the Archdeacon of Bbaale Archdeaconry Mr Dan Kisitu on Thursday led a team of clergy and Christians from Kitimbwa Parish for prayers at the church as a way of cleansing it.
“We have resumed prayers in our church after holding day-long prayers and fasting. We now think it is cleansed of the satanic act that was done inside it,” Mr Komugisha said.
The assistant head of laity at the church, Ms Esther Nakamatte demanded that the couple publicly apologises for their sinful act, or else they risk taking a curse upon themselves.
“We are, however, demanding an apology from the duo. We want them to come in church and apologise to us for what they did; short of that, we shall not forgive them,” she said.
This website reported last week that the man who was caught with the Muslim woman had fled from his home on Thursday and his whereabouts were unknown.
Ms Beatrice Ajwang, the Kayunga District Officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department last week confirmed knowledge of the incident but said the case had not been reported to any police.
Ms Nakamate however revealed that the adulterous man had returned and was avoiding being seen in public because of shame.
Bugonya Church of Uganda is located in Bugonya village, Kayonza subcounty, about 35 kilometres away from Kayunga Town.
