In a deeply moving memorial thanks-giving ceremony held yesterday in Oburin A village, Kateta sub-county, Serere district, dignitaries and hundreds of attendees gathered to pay respects to the late former MP of Serere county, Bishop Patrick Okabe, and his wife Christine Okabe.

The tragic loss of this esteemed couple unfolded in a devastating car accident on December 19, 2022, leaving a profound void in the hearts of the community.

National Vice Chairman of NRM Eastern Uganda, Mike Mukula, delivered a poignant speech as the chief guest on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, highlighting the late Bishop Okabe as an extraordinary individual dedicated to community development and fostering unity.

In a powerful display of solidarity, the Speaker of Parliament, through Mukula, announced a substantial donation of 20 million Ugandan Shillings generous contribution designated to fortify various saving groups in Serere County under the Patrick Okabe Foundation. Originally spearheaded by the late Bishop Okabe, these initiatives have been resiliently continued by his son, Emmanuel Omoding, now the current MP in the constituency.

The financial infusion aims to fortify the economic foundation of the community, underscoring the Speaker's commitment to perpetuating Bishop Okabe's community-driven initiatives.

By empowering these saving groups, the foundation can sustain its mission to enhance the lives of the people in Serere County.

The memorial ceremony served as a poignant tribute to the late Bishop Okabe and his wife, commemorating their invaluable contributions to community development and unity.

The Speaker's substantial financial commitment underscores a dedication to supporting grassroots initiatives aligning with the values championed by the departed couple.

As the community grieves the loss of these influential figures, the Speaker's gesture stands as a beacon of hope and support, affirming that, even in the face of tragedy, the spirit of unity and development endures through collective efforts and generous contributions.

Meanwhile, Mike Mukula called for unity across party lines to maximize benefits for all.

Soroti City West MP, Jonathan Ebwalu, in his speech, lauded the late Bishop as a calm and industrious leader, much like his father. He further commended MPs for fostering community cohesion through the ideology of SACCOs.

Minister Adoa, also the Woman MP of Serere district, praised the late Bishop for his exceptional leadership.

Other leaders present at the ceremony paid tribute to the late couple, describing their son as a true leader who has adeptly learned from his father's actions and translated them into impactful initiatives.
