As the world commemorates International Press Freedom Day under the theme Reporting in the Brave New World: the impact of artificial intelligence on press freedom and media, veteran journalist Emmanuel Opio has called on media practitioners to remain steadfast in defending the truth amidst growing polarization and distrust.
Opio, who serves as Chairperson of the Teso Journalists for Community Empowerment and Communication Officer for Kapelebyong District, emphasized the crucial role journalists play in informing the public and strengthening democracy.
Speaking in an interview to mark the day, Opio urged journalists to remain firm in their commitment to truth and integrity.
“We must stand by the truth and resist any form of influence that seeks to divert us. Our responsibility is to disseminate accurate and honest information that is vital to the wellbeing of our communities,” he said.
He also appealed to stakeholders and authorities to respect the work of journalists, describing journalism as not only a public service but also a divine calling.
“Journalism is a calling from God. It is the fourth estate that plays a key role in holding the government accountable and keeping the community informed, both on national matters and local concerns,” Opio noted.
As Uganda enters a heightened political season, Opio cautioned journalists to clearly understand their professional boundaries and remain objective in their reporting.
In a message of solidarity, Opio expressed support for journalists who have suffered injuries in the course of their duties and called on security agencies, particularly the police, to refrain from acts of violence against media workers.
“To my fellow journalists who have been injured while doing their job, remain strong. Journalism comes with hazards, but our role is essential. I urge the police and all security forces to respect and protect journalists rather than harm them,” he said.
International Press Freedom Day is observed every May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and to defend the media from attacks on their independence.
