SOROTI — The High Court in Soroti delivered a landmark and solemn ruling yesterday evening, sentencing Suzan Vivian Ariokot to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of five-year-old Joan Faith Apio, a pupil at Jozan Nursery and Primary School.
The tragic case, which gripped the local community and the nation, centered on the horrific killing of the young girl on February 5, 2025.
In the judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Boniface Wamala, the court found a total of three individuals guilty of involvement in the heinous crime, handing down stiff sentences reflecting the gravity of the offense.
Alongside Ariokot’s life sentence, the court penalized two other co-accused individuals for their roles in the murder. Former school director Joseph Okedi was sentenced to 35 years in jail, while Detective Corporal John Bosco Obotol received a 45-year prison term.
However, not all standing trial faced the same fate. In yesterday’s ruling, Justice Wamala acquitted three other suspects—school matron Usula Adongo, school cook Valentine Opio, and nursery section head teacher James Edoket. The judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to link the three to the juvenile's murder, ordering their immediate release.
The sentencing brings a measure of legal closure to a case that has drawn widespread grief and outrage over the safety of children in educational institutions. Legal experts and community members alike have lauded the judiciary for delivering justice for young Joan Faith Apio, whose life was tragically cut short.
