KUMI – The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has intensified its mobilization efforts in Kumi District, vowing to reclaim political ground as top party leaders rallied behind Mary Gorrety Atemo, the FDC Woman MP hopeful for the 2026 elections.
The highly attended gathering at Nyero Town Council Grounds on Saturday, February 8, 2025, saw party stalwarts reaffirm their commitment to strengthening FDC’s presence in Teso sub-region and securing victory for Atemo in the upcoming elections.
The event, which began with a thanksgiving mass led by Father Emmanuel Emalu of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Padua Nyero, emphasized peace, unity, and divine blessings for Atemo as she seeks to represent Kumi in Parliament.
Jonathan Ebwalu, MP for Soroti City West, urged the people of Kumi and Ngora to stand by their own and vote for FDC candidates, particularly Atemo and Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA).
“FDC has produced great leaders, including a former Speaker of Parliament. We are mobilizing from constituency to constituency, and no matter the obstacles, we shall push forward.”
His call was echoed by Ngora Woman MP Stella Apolot Isodo, who emphasized the importance of increasing FDC representation in Parliament.
“We need more FDC MPs from Teso to amplify our voices and demand better services for our people.”
Atemo Gains Strong Endorsement from Party Leadership
Acom Alobo Joan, Woman MP for Soroti City, praised Atemo’s resilience and dedication to the people of Kumi, calling on the youth to reject short-term political handouts and vote for visionary leaders.
“Age should not be the issue here—performance should. Atemo has been here with you, fighting for your rights and standing by your side. Support her, and she will represent you effectively in Parliament.”
She also took a swipe at the ruling NRM government, arguing that it had failed to fulfill its promises to the people of Teso.
“When I was growing up, Teso was Uganda’s food basket. Today, our people struggle due to poor policies. It’s time to vote for real change with FDC.”
Nathan Nandala Mafabi, FDC Secretary General, assured Kumi residents that FDC remains the best alternative to deliver much-needed services. He urged voters to reject the ruling NRM government, accusing it of neglecting the region.
FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) was even more direct in his criticism of the NRM regime, stating that it had failed to bring meaningful development despite being in power for over 40 years.
“If NRM couldn’t develop this country in 40 years, do you think they will do it in the next five? Things will only get worse.”
He also condemned the government’s reliance on foreign aid and mismanagement of national resources.
“Museveni spends more money on his family and his office than on agriculture, healthcare, and education. Our farmers are suffering, and our youth remain unemployed. We must vote wisely in 2026.”
POA further reminded the crowd about the unfulfilled promises of cattle compensation, rallying the people of Teso to take a stand.
“If our cows are not returned, then our message is clear - No Cow, No Vote!”
In her speech, Mary Gorrety Atemo expressed deep gratitude to the FDC leadership and her supporters for their unwavering faith in her leadership. She pledged to be a voice for the people of Kumi in Parliament, ensuring accountability and development.
“Your love and solidarity inspire me. I promise to always be by your side, advocating for good governance and the needs of our people.”
She also appreciated her parents, who were present at the event, for their support and guidance throughout her journey.
FDC leaders made it clear that the party is on a mission to revive its strength in Kumi and the entire Teso region. POA called on party members to fill vacant political positions and contest in all available electoral slots.
“Where has our energy gone? Let’s rise again and contest! Kumi County and Kumi Municipality need strong FDC candidates. Atemo has energized us, and we must not let this momentum fade.”
He vowed to personally mobilize at the grassroots level, even if it meant staying in villages to ensure the party’s revival.
“Whether Museveni likes it or not, I will sleep in villages to awaken our party. We must reclaim Kumi!”
The FDC’s show of strength in Kumi signals a fierce political contest ahead of the 2026 elections. With top leaders rallying behind Mary Gorrety Atemo, the party is determined to reclaim lost ground and restore its dominance in Teso sub-region.
As election fever builds up, the people of Kumi now face a crucial decision—whether to stick with the ruling NRM or embrace the change promised by FDC and Atemo.
