Soroti City has officially flagged off a team of young athletes heading to Kabale for the National Kids’ Athletics Competition. The team, comprising 41 members, was selected from various schools across the city during recent inter-school athletics competitions.

According to Simon Opolot, the Soroti City Inspector of Schools and Sports Coordinator, the delegation includes 24 children — 12 under the age of 12 and 12 under the age of 14 — as well as 9 children with special needs. The athletes will be accompanied by four coaches and two delegates.

Opolot emphasized the importance of discipline and good conduct as the children represent Soroti City on the national stage. “We believe this team will do us proud, and we encourage them to stay focused and disciplined throughout the competition,” he said.

Head Coach Ediegu Emmanuel, who also serves as Chairperson of the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) for the Teso Zone, urged the community and local leaders to support the team.

“This is a unique opportunity for these children, especially since many are traveling to Kabale for the first time. We call on parents to ensure their children report early and fully prepared,” he stated.

Ediegu also appealed to politicians and leaders within Soroti to rally behind the young athletes and provide both moral and logistical support as they represent the city at a national level.

The National Kids’ Athletics Competition is expected to draw participants from across the country, offering a platform for talent identification and sports development at the grassroots level.
