The Teso Parliamentary Group (TPG) has elected a new executive leadership, ushering in a renewed commitment to unity among legislators and a coordinated push for the socio-economic transformation of the Teso Sub-region.
The new leadership was elected following a vetting process conducted by a committee chaired by Orungo County Member of Parliament Jeje Odongo. The committee also comprised Vice President Jessica Alupo, Clement Ongalo Obote, Sidronius Opolot Okaasai, Calvin Echodu, and Peter Paul Emaju.
Kanyum County MP Simon Peter Opolot was elected Chairperson of the Teso Parliamentary Group, with Serere County MP Emmanuel Omoding taking the position of Vice Chairperson.
Kasilo County MP Peter Paul Emaju was elected Secretary General, while Kaberamaido MP Alfred Edakasi will serve as Treasurer. Kumi District Woman MP Christine Apolot was elected Publicity Secretary.
The executive further appointed Tororo South MP Fredrick Angura and Kaberamaido District Woman MP Jane Francis Amongin to oversee cultural affairs, while Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere was elected Investment Secretary.
Speaking shortly after the elections, Secretary General Peter Paul Emaju said the new executive assumes office with immediate effect and is determined to build a strong institutional foundation for the parliamentary group.
He said the leadership's immediate priority will be to establish a comprehensive governance framework, including operational guidelines and other key documents that will guide the group's activities.
Emaju revealed that the executive will also develop a five-year parliamentary strategic plan to coordinate legislators' efforts in addressing the key development priorities of the Teso Sub-region.
He added that once the group's internal structures are fully established, the executive intends to seek an audience with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to present the region's major development concerns and discuss possible government interventions.
According to Emaju, Vice President Jessica Alupo urged both the outgoing and incoming leaders to embrace teamwork and rise above political differences for the benefit of the people of Teso.
He said the Vice President cautioned against the divisions that affected the previous leadership, emphasizing that unity among Members of Parliament is essential if the region is to effectively lobby for government support and accelerate development.
Members of the newly elected executive pledged to work together in promoting unity among legislators, strengthening engagement with key stakeholders, and advocating for government programmes and investments that improve livelihoods across the region.
The election marks a leadership transition within the Teso Parliamentary Group, with Simon Peter Opolot succeeding former Chairperson Bosco Okiror, the former Member of Parliament for Usuk County. Okiror lost his parliamentary seat in the January general elections to Richard Ongorok, creating the vacancy that has now been filled by the new leadership.
The newly elected executive is expected to provide a unified voice for Teso in Parliament, champion regional interests, and strengthen collaboration in pursuit of sustainable development across the sub-region.
