SOROTI - Youth in the Teso sub-region have been encouraged to seek guidance from elders and spiritual leaders to stay grounded, uphold moral values, and avoid negative influences.

This call was made during a youth conference organized by the Immaculate Conception Cathedral at Emaus in Soroti, which attracted a large number of young people from across the region. The event featured Rev. Fr. Richard Pius Okiria, a Catholic priest currently serving in the United States, as the keynote speaker.

In his address, Fr. Okiria urged the youth to pursue the right direction in life by engaging with leaders and elders who can offer valuable guidance. He expressed concern over the increasing number of young people indulging in harmful behaviors such as gambling, alcohol consumption, and smoking, warning that such habits could lead to personal ruin and negatively impact society at large.

“The future of our communities lies in the hands of the youth,” said Fr. Okiria. “It is important for young people to remain focused, seek God, and follow the right path in life.”

Beyond spiritual growth, Fr. Okiria also emphasized environmental stewardship. He encouraged the youth to plant trees in their homes as part of efforts to combat climate change and foster environmental sustainability in the region.

Supporting this message, Constantine Acanit, the Vice Chairperson of the Catholic Pastoral Council, urged the youth to reduce time spent idling in trading centers during holidays and instead engage in productive work at home and support their families.

Ambrose Amou, a youth leader from Soroti Catholic Church, rallied his peers to not only listen but also implement the values shared during the conference. “This is not just about listening—it's about practicing what we’ve learned,” Amou said.

Participants at the conference reported feeling renewed and inspired, citing the event as a turning point in their personal growth and a reminder of the strength that comes from community and faith.
