Amuria District — The health sector in Orungo County, long burdened by poor infrastructure and limited resources, is receiving a breath of fresh air following a donation drive led by Teddy Anyuk Osire, an aspiring Member of Parliament for the constituency.
In a move that signals her commitment to revitalizing public service delivery, Anyuk traversed all five health centers serving the seven sub-counties of Orungo — Olwa Health Center II, Morungatuny Health Center III, Ogolai Health Center III, Orungo Health Center III, and Akeriau Health Center II — to donate fifteen mattresses to each facility. The initiative aims to address a long-standing crisis in maternity care, where expectant mothers have often had to deliver on bare floors due to a lack of beds and basic supplies.
"The donation is part of my broader plan to transform the health system in Orungo. This is just the beginning. If this hasn’t been happening in Orungo before, prepare to see it become a daily routine," said Anyuk while addressing residents during the distribution event. "I want to make Orungo a model constituency in the entire Teso sub-region."
Residents welcomed the initiative, hailing it as a long-overdue intervention in a health system that has struggled to meet the needs of the population. Local leaders, too, acknowledged the positive impact of the gesture, though they also highlighted continued gaps.
Joseph Odeng, LC3 chairperson of Morungatuny sub-county, lauded Anyuk for her generosity but called for further support. "Honorable Toto, thank you for this offer. It’s a great relief, but our hospitals still lack beds to place these mattresses. We appeal for more help, possibly through partnerships with development organizations," he said. Odeng also committed to monitoring the use of the donated mattresses to ensure accountability.
In response, Anyuk pledged to continue supporting the health sector, with plans to prioritize the provision of hospital beds, electrification of health centers, maternity ward upgrades, and better accommodation for health workers once elected to Parliament.
Beyond the health sector, Anyuk is also making strides in improving water access. Her ongoing borehole rehabilitation project is restoring clean and safe water to communities across the sub-counties of Ogongora, Akeriau, Ogolai, Morungatuny, Orungo, Orungo Town Council, and Olwa — an effort that has won her further praise among residents.
As election season heats up, Anyuk’s hands-on approach and early delivery of essential services are reshaping the political landscape in Orungo, positioning her as a strong contender in the upcoming parliamentary race.
