Amuria District — Health workers in Orungo County, Amuria District, have raised alarm over rising insecurity and deteriorating infrastructure at several health facilities, hindering effective service delivery—especially during night shifts.

The affected facilities include Morungatuny HC III, Ogolai HC III, Orungo HC III, Akeriau HC II, and Olwa HC II. Staff at these centers cite lack of security, electricity, water, staff accommodation, and essential equipment as major challenges impacting both their safety and the quality of healthcare services offered to the community.

During a recent donation of mattresses to the five health facilities, Teddy Anyuk Osire, a parliamentary aspirant for Orungo County, was briefed about the dire conditions. Health workers emphasized that without urgent interventions, patient care will continue to deteriorate.

Oscar Eibu, the in-charge of Morungatuny HC III, acknowledged the donation but described multiple lingering issues at the facility. “Despite having a perimeter fence, the security guard has no shelter. During rain, he’s forced to abandon his post, posing risks to patients and staff,” Eibu noted. He further highlighted the lack of water, electricity, and sufficient bedding, which hampers service delivery, particularly for in-patients.

Eibu also raised concerns about shared sanitation facilities. “There is only one latrine used by both patients and staff. This compromises hygiene and dignity,” he said.

At Olwa HC II, Health Assistant Peter Eramu echoed similar concerns. “We serve over 300 patients, but the facility lacks electricity, water, and even basic ICT tools like computers. This makes reporting to the Ministry a nightmare,” he lamented.

Eramu called on government officials, political leaders, and development partners to intervene. “We urgently need support to bridge these gaps. Without electricity and computers, it's difficult to deliver quality health services or submit timely reports,” he said.

Patients at the affected health centers have corroborated the workers’ accounts, adding that night-time visits are avoided due to safety fears and poor facility conditions.

Teddy Anyuk Osire, who is vying for the Orungo County parliamentary seat, pledged her commitment to addressing the challenges. “Once elected, I will advocate for improved healthcare infrastructure, including electrification, access to clean water, and better security at our health centers,” she assured.

With the lives and well-being of hundreds of patients at stake, stakeholders urge swift action to restore safety, dignity, and efficiency in the delivery of health services across Orungo County.
