The intersection of faith and politics was on full display in Soroti City this weekend, as leaders from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) joined the Church of Uganda in commemorating the 6th episcopal anniversary of the Bishop of Soroti Diocese.
The celebration, held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, drew both religious and political attention after the FDC handed over a UGX 5 million donation in honor of the Bishop’s service.
Soroti City East Division Mayor Paul Omer represented the FDC, who lauded the Bishop’s leadership and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working with faith-based institutions to uplift communities.
“As a party, we recognize the Church as a pillar of hope, unity, and moral guidance,” said Mayor Omer. “This contribution is a reflection of our support for spiritual leadership and our shared responsibility in nation-building.”
He further requested continued prayers from the Church for peace, wisdom, and prosperity, particularly for leaders, as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.
The Bishop expressed his gratitude to the FDC for their generosity, calling for continued cooperation between political and spiritual leaders in the service of the people. He emphasized the Church’s non-partisan mission but welcomed partnerships that promote social development and peace.
The event, which attracted a wide cross-section of the Soroti community, has since sparked debate in both religious and political circles. While many praised the gesture as a sign of goodwill, others viewed it as a calculated political move as parties begin to position themselves for the upcoming elections.
Political analysts note that engagement with the Church has long been a strategic touchpoint for parties aiming to connect with grassroots voters, especially in regions where religious institutions hold considerable influence.
As the 2026 electoral season approaches, similar encounters between faith and politics are expected to become more frequent nationwide.
