Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been declared the overwhelming winner of the hotly contested race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), decisively sweeping aside her rival, former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga. The victory marks a significant political ascendancy for Among and a notable setback for the long-serving Kadaga.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, announced the results late on Tuesday night, affirming Hon. Among's victory with a commanding 11,680 votes. Her opponent, Rebecca Kadaga, secured a mere 902 votes, out of a total of 12,582 delegates who participated in the election conducted through the lining-up method. The declaration was made at 11:14 pm, signaling a profound shift in the party's female leadership hierarchy.

The outcome solidifies Among's burgeoning influence within the ruling NRM party, complementing her powerful current position as Speaker of Parliament. For Kadaga, a veteran politician who dedicated decades to the party and previously held the Speakership, the defeat represents a significant blow to her standing.

Before the election, Ms. Kadaga addressed the delegates, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the election process. She alleged widespread voter bribery, claiming that a "significant number" of delegates had received Shs 300,000, tablets, and various other incentives specifically designed to influence their votes. These allegations, however, did not appear to sway the final tally.

Political observers keenly watching the race attribute Among’s emphatic victory to her robust financial resources and an extensive political network that played a critical role in mobilizing support among the delegates. This formidable leverage, they suggest, was a key differentiator in a contest that, despite its lopsided final tally, was initially perceived to be a high-stakes battle between two of the most influential women in Ugandan politics.

Among's decisive win not only solidifies her position within the NRM but also reshapes the internal power dynamics, particularly among the party's top female leaders as the NRM looks towards future political cycles.
