Serere District — A wave of grief has engulfed Serere Secondary School and the wider community following the tragic killing of a Senior Four student, in a case that has sparked outrage and renewed calls for justice and youth guidance.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Miriam Acam, was allegedly stabbed to death on Saturday evening in Ocaapa Central Ward, Ocaapa Town Council, at around 7:30 p.m.
According to police reports, Acam, a student at Serere Secondary School, had reportedly visited her boyfriend, Julius Lazarus Otim, 23, a chapati vendor and resident of the area, when the incident occurred. Preliminary findings indicate that the two locked themselves inside a house before a violent altercation broke out.
Witnesses say the couple was last seen together at about 7:00 p.m. Moments later, an alarm was raised by neighbors. Residents who rushed to the scene reportedly found Acam collapsing at the doorway, where she died almost instantly.

“We have one incident which was registered at Serere Police Station, which is a case of suspected murder by stabbing which occurred in Ocaapa Central Ward, Ocaapa Town Council,” Mukombe stated.

Old Students Speak Out
In response to the tragic incident, the Old Students Association of Serere Secondary School issued a strong statement condemning the act and calling for justice.
“It is with deep sorrow and great sadness that we received the shocking news of the killing of a Senior Four student,” the statement read.
The association described the act as “cruel, barbaric, and inhuman,” emphasizing that no disagreement can justify taking a life. They urged authorities to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full force of the law.
Beyond condemning the violence, the Old Students Association used the moment to advise students and young people to prioritize their education and avoid early romantic relationships, which they say often lead to emotional distress, violence, and disrupted futures.
“This is the time for students to concentrate on their academics, build good character, and prepare for a better tomorrow,” the statement emphasized.
They further encouraged youth to embrace disciplined and morally upright lives, guided by religious teachings that promote love, respect for life, and wisdom.
As tensions rise following the incident, the association extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and called for calm among the affected communities.
“We appeal for peace, restraint, and meaningful dialogue among the clans involved so that unity and harmony may prevail,” the statement added.
The tragic death of Miriam Acam has once again highlighted concerns about youth relationships, violence, and the urgent need for community engagement in guiding young people toward safer and more constructive life choices.
Investigations into the case continue as the community awaits justice.
