Frank K. Tumwebaze, Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, has publicly addressed growing concern over his recent weight loss, clarifying that his new appearance is intentional and rooted in a commitment to better health.

The minister’s remarks came after sections of the public expressed sympathy and sent messages wishing him a quick recovery, interpreting his slimmer physique as a sign of illness. However, in a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Tumwebaze dismissed the speculation and reassured the public that he is in good health.

Instead, he used the moment to raise alarm about what he described as a persistent and dangerous misconception in society that being overweight is a sign of good health, while a lean body is often associated with sickness.

“To the contrary, a lean body is a strong one,” Tumwebaze emphasized, noting that such beliefs undermine ongoing efforts to combat non-communicable diseases, which continue to pose a significant public health challenge.

Addressing health professionals, including educators, epidemiologists, and nutritionists, the minister stressed that more work is needed to correct public attitudes toward body image and health. He warned that normalizing overweight and obesity could hinder progress in reducing lifestyle-related illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Tumwebaze explained that weight loss should only raise concern when it is unintentional, unexplained, or linked to underlying medical conditions. In contrast, he described intentional weight loss achieved through disciplined dieting, increased physical activity, and lifestyle adjustments as a positive and commendable health outcome.

“Obesity has never been a badge of honor,” he stated firmly, urging individuals to prioritize healthy living over societal perceptions.

He also acknowledged the concern shown by well-wishers, expressing gratitude to those who reached out in good faith. “I am not sick. My new looks are intentional,” he reassured.

The minister concluded his message with a note of gratitude for life and good health, while extending greetings from the National Leadership Institute, where he is currently engaged.

His statement has since sparked broader discussions on social media and beyond, with many weighing in on the importance of promoting accurate health information and encouraging healthier lifestyles across the country.
