Kampala — The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has directed its party structure leaders who have been nominated as independents in the ongoing 2025/2026 general elections to immediately resign from their leadership positions.

In a circular issued by the Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, the party expressed concern that several individuals who either lost in the primaries or did not participate at all had opted to contest as independent candidates, contrary to NRM’s regulations.

“Those leaders who have not been nominated, please desist from presenting your candidature as Independents,” Todwong emphasized in the communication.

The directive requires all party leaders who fall under this category to hand over their offices to their respective Vice Chairpersons or higher-level Party Chairpersons. Todwong further warned that those who defy the directive risk suspension from participating in any NRM electoral activities.

According to the circular, this move is aimed at ensuring cohesion within the party and facilitating the smooth coordination of campaign activities ahead of the 2026 polls.

The National Electoral Commission opened nominations on September 3, 2025, and the process will close on October 16, 2025.

The communication was copied to the NRM National Chairman, members of the Central Executive Committee, and all District and City Administrative Secretaries.

At the bottom of the circular, the party reaffirmed its guiding principles of Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, Democracy, and Socio-Economic Transformation.
