Francis Esudu of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has ended years of opposition dominance in Soroti City after winning the mayoral seat in the recently concluded elections. Esudu secured a decisive victory with 11,504 votes, marking a significant political shift in Uganda’s youngest city.
Esudu defeated four contenders, including Paul Omer of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), who came second with 8,274 votes. Independent candidate Edmond Elasu garnered 3,435 votes, while Simon Peter Ebitu and Emmanuel John Opio polled 2,280 and 144 votes respectively.
A trained civil engineer by profession, Esudu takes over leadership from outgoing mayor Joshua Edongu, who did not seek re-election. The election results were officially announced by the Soroti City Returning Officer, John Gonzanga Olinga.
Speaking shortly after being declared winner, Esudu said he was humbled by the confidence voters had placed in him and pledged to serve the city with commitment, transparency, and inclusivity. He promised to focus on infrastructure development, improved service delivery, and economic growth.
In the council races, Ivan Onyait of the NRM was declared winner of the directly elected councillor seat for Soroti City West Division. Meanwhile, Murshid Naji Abdallah of the FDC won the councillor seat for Soroti City East Division.
Esudu’s victory signals a new political chapter for Soroti City, as the NRM consolidates its presence in an area previously dominated by opposition leadership.
